Sermon Study: The Real Jesus - From Water to Wine
Watch or listen to the sermon below.
Scripture Focus
John 2:1–11
Jesus’ first miracle reveals far more than His ability to meet a practical need. The transformation of water into wine is a sign of new creation life. The water, used for ceremonial washing, represents a life that sustains but does not satisfy. The wine, however, represents joy, abundance, celebration, and fulfillment.
Jesus does not come to improve what already exists; He offers something entirely new.
This story gently calls us to honesty. Performance is about excellence and faithfulness; pretending is about avoidance. When the wine is gone, Mary does not hide the need, she brings it to Jesus. In His hands, what could have been a moment of shame becomes the beginning of transformation.
Faith plays a central role in this moment. The servants are instructed to fill the jars completely, even though the task seems disconnected from the problem. Their obedience is essential. The miracle does not occur halfway through the process but happens only once obedience is complete. This reminds us that godly transformation requires our participation, even when we don’t fully understand the outcome.
Our expectation also matters. Scripture tells us that God is moved by faith (Hebrews 11:6). Faith is not passive belief, but active trust that anticipates God at work. As Corrie Ten Boom said, “Faith sees the impossible, believes the unbelievable, and receives the impossible.” The greater the expectation, the greater the encounter.
The story begins with lack, but when that lack is placed in Jesus’ hands, it is transformed into abundance. What is surrendered to Him is never diminished, it is multiplied and redeemed!
Further Reading
Read and reflect on the following passages alongside John 2:1–11. As you read, take note how faith, obedience, trust, and expectation are consistently connected to God’s activity.

John 10:10 – Jesus’ promise of abundant life
Reflection Questions
Take time to journal and pray through these questions slowly:
Identifying the Lack: What feels like it is running low in my life right now that Jesus needs to fill back up?
Expectation Check: Where have I lowered my expectations of what God is willing or able to do?
Obedience Step: Where is Jesus inviting me to trust Him through obedience?
Prayer Prompt
Take a moment to bring yourself to the Lord.
“Jesus, Thank you that you want more for me! I bring to You what feels empty or insufficient in my life. I confess the places where I have settled for survival instead of abundance, where I have lacked belief and expectation.
Increase my faith, not just to believe, but to trust and expect. Give me the courage to obey You fully, even when I don’t yet see the outcome.
I place my lack in Your hands and trust You to transform it into something new, joyful, and abundant.
Amen.”
